Rotary Meeting April 5th 2012

Today’s meeting started with a little fun. The country club is doing some work on the walkway so everyone had to use the side door.

After the prayer, pledge and 4 way test we had Presentation attend to receive funds.

Our meeting progressed with our business of dues and guests. We then covered activities such as boy scout camps, Edge outreach, the Ali Walk/shuffle. Other activities we discussed was our golf outing. We do have an early bird special. The Students are going to Haiti next week. The board is having a meeting at the club.

Smile Kentucky Hand-Out

Our guest speaker is from the back side learning center at church hill downs. Our speaker had received a scholarship in high school. She got a degree in Spanish and worked in Mexico. The has gone back in school and has finished all the work for a doctor degree. She has worked on the back side for 8 years. They have a computer center. They have computer classes, english and other activities.

She spent a little time talking about living on the back side. Rarity do they leave if they live on the back side.

They do a lot to help the community of the back side. They are a volunteer attendance group so they have to keep everything fun and entertaining.

She talked about the different jobs that people have on the backside.

This year they are going to do a survey. They have never done it formally. They are going to have students from IU south east come do the survey. By doing the survey they will be able better serve the backside.

Funding wise they are part of the Museum. They are trying to start their own funding etc but it might take some time.

They have 2 events planned. One is a dinner event with BBC & Four Roses. The second is a golf outing in memory of J.L. “buck” Wheat.

Attached is the brochure for the backside learning center.

Rotary Meeting March 29, 2012

We started our weekly meeting with great energy. We started by introducing a guest. A few minutes later we introduced another guest.

Joann tricked the Rotarian of the Years from 2000 and newer to being the committee. She set the rest of the committees for year end awards.

Our next group trip will be May 8th. We will be going to Woodford Reserve.

The foundation reported on there meeting. Giving a grant to the Ali group. Also that we need members to giving money to the foundation. They also announced that we have planned to give a $2,500.00 scholarship.

In regards to service projects. We don’t know about Edge Project in Paintsville. Habitat for humanity will have a home in Oldham. Apple patch will be in May June. Boy Scout adventure camp will be last week June. We are still collecting for Help Ministries.

International. Elections happened and ready to continue international product.

The basics for our golf outing were covered.

Terry Announced that the Oldham Era is starting an North Oldham newspaper. They are going to give us a column. Terry is starting to collect info for it.

There will be a board meeting in on 2nd Tuesday of April.

After happy bucks and fines we introduced our guest speaker from the department of Ag.

He spoke on the pork industry. He started pork farming 25 years ago. In 1970s they started working on getting pork to be better for us. They started getting the hogs out of the field and into a barn.

Then after getting the product better they started “the other white meet”.

Now the pork industry is specialized. Now they raise 30% more “product” per year compared to 25 years ago.

He explained the new building design and breeding.

Prospect Goshen Rotary Meeting March 22, 2012

Today’s meeting started with introducing our guests.  Cathy Robertson joined us from Eastern Area Community Ministries.  Ted joined us again to sell chances for Thunder Over Louisville Hotel Room.

After quickly going through the standard reports we talked about what service events we have coming up in the next couple of months.

Our guest speaker was in regards to Haiti and Women’s health with Cancer.  The slide show showed the events in Haiti after the recent earth quakes and tried to show how the event relates to cancer treatment.  One example from the slides was that 90% of the women who have cancer in Haiti have no access to treatment.  Just after the earth quake the one treatment center was damaged.  Less than 1 percent have access to cancer screening in the entire country of Haiti.

World Wide there is no data of Cancer in Haiti.  The reason is that they have no screening that would report the data.

All most all the cancer found in Haiti is found in the late stages where no treatment is available.

Documents from our speaker are below:

Rotary Club Meeting March 8, 2012

Today’s weekly meeting of the Prospect Goshen Rotary club started with our weekly business. We were lucky to induct 2 new members. We introduced our guests and covered our charitable projects.

After happy bucks which included Birthday wishes for Rotary Family Members, Fines for leaving early and the safety of some employees who live in Southern Indiana.

Our guest speakers were covering 2 centuries of Black History in Louisville. Some interesting facts that were covered included that about 1840 was when the slave population stopped increasing but free black population start to grow. Another thing about the Underground Railroad was that more freed slaves were run through Louisville than almost all other areas of the United States. Louisville was an interesting area for Blacks in the Civil way. The Army durning the Civil way would protect the Free Blacks while the city officles would not.

Louisivlle had never been a city where all the blacks lived in 1 or 2 areas. They lived all over the area. One black lady stanged a freedom ride on the Louisville Street Cars long before Rosa Parks was born. In 1879 Simmons University was formed for Black Students. It was renamed State University at a later date. It was 1 of 4 Universities in the nation that had professional degrees for Blacks. It went bankrupt in the early 1900s.

Mazzeek school is named after Anthony Mazaeek. He was the leader of the Black Freedom Movement in Louisville. He worked to get Librarys established for the Black Communities.

Portrait Photographery was popular in the African American Community.  It was common to get dressed up and have your picture taken.  This lasted up until the great depression.

In 1925 the University of Louisville tried to buy property.  The Black community asked for provisions for black students before the Open Bonds were released but U of L did not do it.  The Black Community organized against the Bond Issue due to the lack of Black Provisions.  Later when U of L agreed to the provisions the Bond Issue was successful.

The 2nd speaker talked about Old Walnut Street.  Walnut street is now Ali street.  When talking about Walnut the speaker wants to start with Once Upon a Time but it was real.  It was the the Social life of black community.  There were a large assortment of Black Owned businesses.  There were 3 movie houses, banks and insurance businesses.  The guest speaker remembered going there in his youth.  The clubs would open up later after 12 for Adults and he was pretty sure it was a little more “Raunchy”.  The good thing was that good Black roll models were visible to the black youth.
