Today’s meeting started with introducing our guests. Cathy Robertson joined us from Eastern Area Community Ministries. Ted joined us again to sell chances for Thunder Over Louisville Hotel Room.
After quickly going through the standard reports we talked about what service events we have coming up in the next couple of months.
Our guest speaker was in regards to Haiti and Women’s health with Cancer. The slide show showed the events in Haiti after the recent earth quakes and tried to show how the event relates to cancer treatment. One example from the slides was that 90% of the women who have cancer in Haiti have no access to treatment. Just after the earth quake the one treatment center was damaged. Less than 1 percent have access to cancer screening in the entire country of Haiti.
World Wide there is no data of Cancer in Haiti. The reason is that they have no screening that would report the data.
All most all the cancer found in Haiti is found in the late stages where no treatment is available.
Documents from our speaker are below:

Today’s weekly meeting of the Prospect Goshen Rotary club started with our weekly business. We were lucky to induct 2 new members. We introduced our guests and covered our charitable projects.
After happy bucks which included Birthday wishes for Rotary Family Members, Fines for leaving early and the safety of some employees who live in Southern Indiana.
Our guest speakers were covering 2 centuries of Black History in Louisville. Some interesting facts that were covered included that about 1840 was when the slave population stopped increasing but free black population start to grow. Another thing about the Underground Railroad was that more freed slaves were run through Louisville than almost all other areas of the United States. Louisville was an interesting area for Blacks in the Civil way. The Army durning the Civil way would protect the Free Blacks while the city officles would not.
Louisivlle had never been a city where all the blacks lived in 1 or 2 areas. They lived all over the area. One black lady stanged a freedom ride on the Louisville Street Cars long before Rosa Parks was born. In 1879 Simmons University was formed for Black Students. It was renamed State University at a later date. It was 1 of 4 Universities in the nation that had professional degrees for Blacks. It went bankrupt in the early 1900s.
Mazzeek school is named after Anthony Mazaeek. He was the leader of the Black Freedom Movement in Louisville. He worked to get Librarys established for the Black Communities.
Portrait Photographery was popular in the African American Community. It was common to get dressed up and have your picture taken. This lasted up until the great depression.
In 1925 the University of Louisville tried to buy property. The Black community asked for provisions for black students before the Open Bonds were released but U of L did not do it. The Black Community organized against the Bond Issue due to the lack of Black Provisions. Later when U of L agreed to the provisions the Bond Issue was successful.
The 2nd speaker talked about Old Walnut Street. Walnut street is now Ali street. When talking about Walnut the speaker wants to start with Once Upon a Time but it was real. It was the the Social life of black community. There were a large assortment of Black Owned businesses. There were 3 movie houses, banks and insurance businesses. The guest speaker remembered going there in his youth. The clubs would open up later after 12 for Adults and he was pretty sure it was a little more “Raunchy”. The good thing was that good Black roll models were visible to the black youth.
